Another confirmation that transport policies favor the growth of freight traffic on the Brenner motorway

One of the arguments most used by supporters of the new Brenner railway is that this would be the only possibility to address the age-old question of air pollution largely produced by the transport of goods on the A22.

We have always replied that pollution represents a real emergency and that the populations along the Brenner axis cannot wait thirty years to be able to breathe cleaner air.

The proponents themselves know that building the new line alone, without rail-friendly transport policies, will not take a truck off the road.

While they are struggling to support the need to implement the modal shift on the Brenner, in practice:

  • they favor road transport with tariff policies that make it extremely advantageous compared to rail transport;
  • they keep motorway tolls on Italian routes so convenient for hauliers that they allow them to lengthen the route even a lot while still maintaining economic advantages. This triggers “diverted” traffic flows in the order of at least one third of the total [1] .

Confirmation of this comes from the Traffic Transfer Report July 2011 – June 2013 (November 2013) of the “Federal Department of the Environment, Transport, Energy and Communication DETEC” of the Swiss Confederation [2] .

As for motorway tolls, in June 2013 on the most used routes for freight transport, the Brenner-Verona section had the lowest rate per kilometer, as can be seen in the following table (column 3) with as much as 17 cents per km.
